"ALBEROBELLO SECRET"
THE HERMETIC SYMBOLISM
OF THE TRULLI
The construction of the Apulian Trulli is linked to pagan cults and ancient ancestral rites which were subsequently Christianized.
Despite the passage of time, their remote origin can be traced through tradition.
We do not yet know exactly when they actually arose in the Mediterranean area. Presumably the original centers were Mesopotamia, Egypt and Crete, Judea, Cappadocia, Dalmatia, Sicily, Sardinia and even Ireland, Bolivia and the Yucatan.
The current name trullo derives from the transposition of the term, according to the Latin hypothesis, into Turris, Turulla, Trulla, Trullum to indicate mainly tower-shaped buildings.
According to other documentary sources, the trulli were introduced in Puglia by the Mycenians around the 13th century BC. and therefore the popular legend seems rather unreliable that they were built by peasants by order of Giangirolami Acquaviva d'Aragona, Count of Conversano, and better known as the "Guercio di Puglia" as he is devoid of an eye. Even today, the phases of the construction of a new trullo are lost in the mists of time and emphasize the need for man to dialogue with God.
In Alberobello a unique and exclusive landscape still survives today where the man of the third millennium can find the same ancestral roots of a lost knowledge, linked to the Sumerian culture (Tu-ul), the Sardinian Nuraghe and Phoenician buildings.
